Position Description

This position description outlines the requirements and responsibilities of the individual who will serve as the Assistant Clinical Dean for Montana WWAMI, coordinating the various clinical medical education activities in Montana. The successful candidate would hold an academic appointment as clinical instructor, clinical assistant professor, clinical associate professor, or clinical professor in one of the School of Medicine academic departments. The position is a 0.50 appointment and will be based in Montana with travel expected throughout the WWAMI region. It is expected that the physician who fills this role will continue to be active in Montana's medical community. Clinical faculty hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms. Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

The base salary range for this position will be: $16,667 - $22,917 per month ($200,004 - $275,004 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Responsibilities:

• Represent and advocate for the UWSOM needs, challenges, and opportunities for medical education in Montana.
• Represent UWSOM in Montana by meeting regularly with the leadership of institutions of higher education in Montana, Commission of Higher Education, legislature, other governmental officials and medical groups and associations.
• Work closely with the existing Montana WWAMI Clinical Dean to coordinate the clinical programs in Montana.
• Work closely with the Assistant Dean, Foundations Phase, Montana WWAMI to ensure a quality, cohesive Montana WWAMI educational program.
• Work closely with the UWSOM based clerkship directors to oversee the coordination of required and elective clinical clerkships including the WRITE and TRUST sites in Montana.
• Work closely with the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs, Associate Deans for Admissions, Curriculum, Educational Quality Improvement, and Student Affairs to ensure the implementation and management of the educational program in Montana and to facilitate change when modifications to the curriculum are determined to be necessary.
• Work closely with the Vice Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion regarding UWSOM programs applicable to the Montana WWAMI program.
• Work closely with the Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education programs in Montana, including UWSOM programs and UWSOM affiliated programs.
• Work closely with the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs especially to provide faculty development for clinical faculty and preceptors in Montana.
• Maintain a liaison role between hospitals in Montana, the state hospital association, the county and state medical societies, residency programs and the UWSOM to assist in Continuing Medical Education efforts.
• Maintain a liaison role and help facilitate collaborative research between UWSOM and appropriate medical research programs in Montana.
• Work with UW Medicine clinical leadership to explore collaborative clinical programmatic planning.
• Help develop and manage the budget for the Montana WWAMI office.
• Help supervise administrative positions in the Montana WWAMI office.

Working Relationships: The primary reporting relationship of this position is to the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs. This individual will also work collaboratively with the existing Montana WWAMI Clinical Dean to coordinate the clinical programs in Montana.

Qualifications

The individual performing this role should hold a Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Osteopathy degree and be board certified in a recognized medical specialty. The physician must meet the requirements for a full and unrestricted medical license in the State of Montana and must meet the requirements for appointment to the clinical faculty. A minimum of five years of clinical practice is preferred with some of this experience having occurred in Montana. Past experience must include active participation in medical education. Administrative experience is preferred. Education, training, and experience in a primary care field of medicine are preferred. Prior experience and involvement with the WWAMI program are preferred. Prior involvement in a leadership role in the local or state medical community or local or state specialty specific organization (organized medicine) in Montana is preferred.
