Under the supervision of the attending faculty physician, the Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for the provision of patient care for dialysis patients as part of the Dialysis Outreach Program. Provides advanced clinical and procedural assistance, support in treating and managing outpatients as part of the dialysis outreach team. Evaluates patients and performs history and physical, patient preparation, for procedures and subsequent management.
Solves complex clinical problems and communicates directly with the attending physician. Consultant and liaison for patients/families. Provides teaching to patients, staff and community organizations. Provide rounding coverage at community dialysis units. Provide effective liaison with community physicians and referring physicians for expeditious care of patients. Help maintain departmental database and quality assurance.
California Physician Assistant (PA) license.
Current PA Certification from NCCPA.
BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.
Theoretical background in: anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.
Proven ability to perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.
Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data in a meaningful manner.
Knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for the patients care and well-being. Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner.
Strong writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes. Ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient, outpatient plans of treatment.
Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.
Skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people. Ability to properly counsel patients and families, particularly in delicate or death and dying situations.
Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel. Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.
Demonstrated knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.
Previous clinical exposure to nephrology and/or dialysis.
Work location is UCSD Hillcrest and community dialysis units.
Must be able to obtain UCSD medical staff privileges.
Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice and travel to locations based on business needs.
May require evening hours. While not required, weekend hours may occasionally be performed if preferred.
