The Department of Geography, within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Buffalo, invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to investigate the roles that aeolian dust, the land surface, and vegetation play in determining both regional and global climate. The importance of the land surface to the atmosphere is a rapidly growing field of climate research, particularly the role of dust in energy balance, cloud formation, and biogeochemistry. The specific research direction will be developed based on the skills and interest of the applicant but will generally be targeted toward understanding the role of dust in a changing climate, feedbacks between dust, drought, and vegetation, and understanding sources of dust emission and deposition variability at various timescales.
In this role you will be responsible for:
Publishing peer-reviewed articles regarding research findings
Presenting research findings at conferences and meetings
Acquiring datasets of global observations and model output
Performing statistical analysis of large datasets to gain understanding of land-atmosphere interactions
Qualified candidates are encouraged to submit applications by September 1, 2019 for priority review. This temporary, 12 month position carries an initial appointment for one-year with potential for renewal (maximum of 2 years total) based on performance and availability of funds.
The position is affiliated with the Geography Department at the University at Buffalo. Ph.D. in atmospheric science, earth science, geoscience, hydrology, or a related field. Qualified candidates will possess experience in the use of climate models, climate model output, and/or global observational datasets; be proficient in programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or R), and quantitative data analysis; and demonstrate an ability to work independently, communicate and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
