The Department of Integrative Biology (IB) offers Undergraduate and Graduate academic programs as well as Faculty Research that focuses on the integration of structure and function that influences the biology, ecology, and evolution of organisms. It investigates integration at all levels of organization from molecules to the biosphere, and in all branches of the tree of life: plants, animals, fungi, and microbes.
Research in Michael Shapira's Lab seeks to understand the fundamentals of host-microbe interactions in the context of the whole organism, using the powerful genetic model Caenorhabditis elegans as a model host. We focus on the role of host genetic factors in shaping gut microbiome structure and function, how gut commensals affect host immunity and host-pathogen interactions, and how aging changes all that (with special interest in the role of antagonistic pletriopy in aging). Our level of investigation spans the range between molecular mechanisms, ecological constraints and impact on evolution.

•Maintain strain collections and databases, involving growing and maintaining bacterial and C. elegans cultures; generate new strains using standard C. elegans protocols and PCR screening. •Maintain and help running experiments on the Illumina MiniSeq Instrument. •Initiate mentoring of newcomers to the lab. Introduce them to basic protocols, available resources, and lab etiquette. •Serve as lab representative responsible for all safety matters (chemical, biological, etc). •Will also be in charge of maintenance of instruments (mainly microscopes and an Illumina MiniSeq). •Take inventory of, and order supplies through approved vendors in the BearBuy system •Manage and distribute routine lab chores (medium and plate preparation, etc.) between lab members. •Document and update common lab protocols.•Technical assignments at this level typically require scientific knowledge and skills which might be expected from incumbents at the college 'upper division' level or from incumbents who have acquired equivalent knowledge and skills through experience. •Basic microbiology techniques and aseptic practices •Experience with biochemical and molecular biology techniques, •Familiarity with basic computer software (knowledge of working with Excel/word/PowerPoint, etc).
Education/Training: •Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and three years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Technical Unit (TX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE).
