Reporting to the Director of the Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center, the Associate Archivist will process and maintain archival collections, special collections, and the subject-oriented general collection; assist with preservation initiatives; create finding aids and user guides; develop physical and digital exhibits; assist patrons and visitors with research and access questions; assist the Director with events planning and management and special projects; help supervise the Graduate Assistant and oversee the Center in the Director’s absence; and perform general administrative support for the Center as needed.
The part-time Associate Archivist will work 21 hours a week, generally Monday/Wednesday/Friday, between the hours of 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. or at specially scheduled times possibly including evenings and weekends on occasion.
DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Arrange and describes archival collections and special collections in the Phenomenology Center. Liaise with Acquisitions department on book ordering for the general collection.
Processes archival and special collections, preparing finding-aids and other research tools for the website, LibGuides, and/or ArchivesSpace.
Provides reference or retrieval assistance for patrons requesting phenomenological information and materials in person, by phone, e-mail or fax.
Assists with the preservation of documents, books, photographs, artifacts, and other materials, including digitization projects.
Supports Director in the planning and implementing several large annual phenomenology-related events. Hosts multiple other events and meetings in the Center, coordinating calendaring, space configurations, and tracking visitors.
Helps to design exhibits and displays for special events in the Center.
Co-supervise Graduate Assistant and oversees Center in the absence of the Director.
Performs other related job duties as assigned by the Director.
The candidate should possess a Master’s Degree in Public History or Library Science with a specialization in Archives or Museum Studies or equivalent.
Effective interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
Demonstrated computer skills including use of email, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, and web page development and management.
Ability to work gracefully with students, faculty, co-workers, and the public.
The candidate must be able to learn and perform assigned tasks with little supervision and be able to work cooperatively with colleagues, staff, students and patrons.
Significant undergraduate or graduate coursework in Philosophy, Psychology, Theology/Religious Studies, or Communications, ideally with some background in phenomenology or nineteenth- and twentieth-century continental thought or a strong willingness to learn about this field.
Experience with library/archival applications including LibGuides, ArchivesSpace, Omeka.
