This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) Temporary Laboratory Assistant position for the Department of Integrative Biology, PISCO program at Oregon State University (OSU).
The appointee will assist professors, technicians, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students in research on ecosystem dynamics of rocky reef communities and the near shore ocean along the West Coast. Responsibilities include laboratory, intertidal, and offshore field work. Shore and lab work include: water sample processing, chlorophyll-a analysis of water samples; data entry; making sample devices; maintaining field equipment; preparing field collectors; assisting with instrument calibrations, surveys of intertidal communities; biodiversity and abundance. Offshore work includes deployment, recovery, and maintenance of moorings, water sampling and sample processing, and construction of mooring components as needed.
This position requires working early mornings, long hours in the field and occasional weekends, multiple overnight trips, the ability to do technical hiking with a heavy load, and resistance to seasickness.
The College of Science comprises 16 academic departments and programs that offer 17 disciplinary degrees, containing 45 options among them, as well as 11 pre-professional options. Training or experience demonstrating the a) knowledge of basic laboratory techniques; b) knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, and materials; c) knowledge of basic math; d) ability to follow formulas accurately; e) ability to handle, package, and store laboratory specimens and materials; f) ability to operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment; g) ability to learn routing testing methods, procedures, and techniques; h) ability to keep accurate records in conformance with laboratory procedures; and i) ability to follow written and verbal instructions. High school courses, in chemistry, biology, mathematics, or any course which included laboratory work, are considered qualifying.
