Summary of Duties:
The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is seeking a Dental Surgical Assistant for its Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). OMFS offers a full scope of surgical techniques for a variety of problems of the face and mouth. Many of our faculty surgeons have particular expertise in select sub-specialties, including temporomandibular disorder, nerve repair, orthognathic surgery, and cleft lip and palate repair.
The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is the fourth largest public dental school in the United States and it is the only public dental school in Ohio. The college is divided into ten divisions with all major ADA-recognized dental specialties represented.
This position serves as dental surgical assistant in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) within the College of Dentistry; provides direct, hands-on assistance throughout a wide range of oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures working for a variety of faculty and resident surgeons; works with dental students; performs x-ray functions; responsible for infection control; prepares and distributes instruments; supports community outreach efforts; stocks supplies; works off-site as scheduled; participates in the establishment and maintenance of a positive, professional, and patient-centered workplace; committed to completion of patient care regardless of pre-assigned work hours; may work occasional scheduled or unscheduled overtime as necessitated by patient care needs.
Work hours are Monday – Friday and vary from as early as 7:00 a.m. to as late as 5:00 p.m.
This position requires the successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
A dental assistant needs to be able to: use of both hands, dexterity in the fingers and the ability to manipulate instruments, materials, dental hand pieces, and operate dental equipment. The use of feet is necessary to manipulate the rheostat for hand pieces or other dental equipment. The body must be able to work from a dental stool in order to perform most dental procedures. The ability to sit and stand for a duration of time is also necessary. Other specific requirements include color spectrum differentiation; manual dexterity/motor coordination, hand-eye coordination, physical communications; visual acuity and communication/language development. Individuals in this position may be exposed to the following: bloodborne pathogens; chemical hazards (skin irritants); vibrating equipment; use of sharp instruments; and latex.

Six months experience (six courses) in dental office practices and procedures; six months experience (six courses) in dental operatory practices and procedures; six months experience (six courses) in care of dental equipment; six months experience (six courses) in dental clinic procedures; six months of experience (six courses) in expanded dental duty procedures; six months experience (six courses) in forehand assisting techniques; three months experience (three courses) in supervision, may be required for some positions. MUST pass health standards and requirements prescribed by law prior to appointment (e.g. hepatitis vaccination series and TB tests). Positions performing radiography must be registered with the Ohio Dental Board as a Dental Assistant Radiographer.
Current BLS/CPR certification required at all times throughout employment; current radiographer license required at all times throughout employment; dental assisting experience; knowledge with multiple implant systems and a wide variety of dental and dental surgical instruments in a surgical environment; AAOMS anesthesia assistant certification within four months of hire; previous experience in an oral and maxillofacial surgery office.
Target Salary: $16.00 - $18.00 Hourly
