The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 500+ full-time salaried faculty members and 150+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 800+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers.
There are over 250 clinical faculties practicing at multiple sites and hospitals. Professional fee billings for the department exceed $50 million with collections of over $19 million per year. The total annual budget is approximately $170 million, which includes contract and grant revenues, clinical practice and medical center funds, and other state and private endowment funds.
The Bioinformatics Programmer will work with a multi-disciplinary group to perform data analysis and also to develop new state-of-the-art analysis methods, computational algorithms and software tools to address current challenges in biomedical research. The lab's primary analysis focus is on the genomics of cancer.
The Bioinformatics Programmer will also work as a member of the team that develops GenePattern Notebook, a software environment based on the Jupyter Notebook and GenePattern platforms, developed to integrate the benefits of reproducible electronic research narratives with a large repository of bioinformatics analysis methods, and to make these available to researchers at all levels of programming experience.
A major component of the GenePattern Notebook project is a collection of notebooks providing analysis workflows for use by the worldwide genomics research community. The Bioinformatics Programmer will develop, test, and publish GenePattern notebooks, and will train others on the programs and software as needed.
A Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or other related discipline.
A minimum of three (3+) or more years of bioinformatics/programmer experience.
Thorough knowledge of research function.
Thorough skills in analysis and consultation.
Strong skill to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated skills in project management.
Solid research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations.
Thorough knowledge of computational methods and approaches, including prior experience with algorithms, data analysis, applied mathematics, probability and statistics.
Must be able to work well as part of an interdisciplinary team of biologists, medical researchers, computational biologists, and software developers.
Experience programming/scripting skills using scientific languages and computing/statistical packages such as Python and numpy, pandas, scikit, etc. Strong oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to develop, organize, and track projects and coordinate complex activities requiring a high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
Advanced degree in Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or other related discipline; or a combination of education and experience.
Experience with a variety of bioinformatics tools/applications and genomic databases.
Demonstrated experience working in a Unix environment.
Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming.
