DEPARTMENT AND/OR UNIT SPECIFIC – ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
A Postdoctoral Scientist position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Wohaib Hasan within the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The postdoctoral scientist will work on two main projects in the laboratory. The first project investigates mechanisms of endocardial thrombosis, particularly endothelial pro/anti-coagulant mechanisms. The second project investigates neuronal triggers for atrial fibrillation in obesity. Both projects involve working with both small animal models and human biospecimens. The postdoctoral scientist will develop novel assays and interface with core facilities at CSMC to advance research objectives.
The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research (both directed and independent) under the direction of Dr. Hasan, submit and publish papers and posters, make oral presentations, and apply for and receive grant funding. The postdoctoral scientist must be well organized and be able to demonstrate writing skills, ability to collect and interpret data, and the ability to work collaboratively with other scientists/investigators. Development plans specific to the candidate will ensure a path for development and growth.
Doctorate (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in area directly related to field of research specialization.
Works independently on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within area of specialization.
Acquires thorough technical and theoretical knowledge of research project and objectives during one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment.
Demonstrated aptitude to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, and analysis and operation and maintenance of specialized equipment. Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of specialized equipment.
Experience in one of the following would be advantageous; (i) cardiac autonomic innervation, (ii) coagulation and hemostasis, particularly endocardial thrombosis, (iii) neuronal mechanisms for arrhythmogenesis. Experience with small animal surgeries, coagulation assays, cardiac physiology, cell and tissue culture, microscopy, nerve stimulations and blood pressure/EKG monitoring are preferred.
Ability to carry and lift up to 20 lbs. Ability to stand for up to four hours per day. Ability to sit and use a computer for 4-6 hours at a time.
