The Division of Medical Education (https://meded.ucsd.edu/) in the UC San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine (SOM) is committed to building an excellent and diverse faculty, staff, and student body, and seek a motivated and innovative individual to serve as Academic Coordinator in the Office of Educational Support Services (OESS).
Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Educational Support Services, the incumbent is responsible for program design, delivery, and administration of academic support services for medical and pharmacy students. Provides academic support for Anatomy and Histology instruction in the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy. Working with faculty and course directors, designs and implements small group conferences and case-based learning and problem-based learning sessions. Works with OESS leadership to plan and coordinate a summer program for entering medical and second-year pharmacy students, which prepares students from educationally diverse backgrounds for their core courses. Candidates with proper credentials may also be given the opportunity to serve as an instructor in the Medical Education curriculum.
Summary of Duties: Provide academic support for the anatomy instruction
Review and revise course learning objectives
Consult with clinical faculty about structures. Cross-check prioritized structures against American Association of Clinical Anatomists lists
Coordinate lecture and lab schedules with faculty block directors
Review content from other curricular threads for opportunities to integrate with anatomy
Attend anatomy lectures, facilitate anatomy labs and supervise open anatomy lab sessions
Draft and revise dissection instructions, create instructional videos and independent study modules
Draft and analyze cadaveric/prosection review assignments, draft curricular block exams and quizzes, prepare and grade cadaveric/prosection practical exams
Provide academic support for histology instruction
Consult with Pathology faculty about structures and learning objectives
Develop comprehensive list of histology specimens, create, curate and organize MedPix electronic images
Review curricular content from other threads for opportunities to integrate with Histology
Facilitate Histology labs, supervise open histology lab sessions, recruit clinical facilitators & TAs to assist in open histology lab sessions
Draft and analyze lab and practical exams, curricular block exams and quizzes, prepare specimens and grade lab and practical exams
Track student performance, develop and oversee remediation activities
Review faculty and TA evaluations and work with instructors to improve teaching performance
Educational Support Services
Design, implement, facilitate and conduct tutorial sessions, workshops and review sessions for students
Working with faculty and course directors, design and implement small group conferences, case-based and problem-based learning sessions. Lead discussions and facilitate student interactions.
With OESS leadership, plan and coordinate the summer program for entering medical students and second-year pharmacy students (Core Topics in Biomedical Sciences - CTBS), which prepares students from educationally diverse backgrounds for the first-year School of Medicine core courses
When requested, plan and implement review sessions designed to strengthen students' skills prior to taking the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), Step 1
Develop educational materials (study questions and guides, summary tables, lecture syllabi) to complement teaching activities and educational support services.
Candidates must have a Master's degree in the Biomedical Sciences, Health Professions Education or a related field.
Other qualifications include:
A professional background of academic training and/or experience in the biomedical sciences.
Demonstrated ability to design and organize educational materials to supplement instruction.
Demonstrated experience designing and implementing academic support programs aimed to meet specific needs of select groups of students.
Knowledge of theories and principles of higher education and student development.
