Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Coordinator for Challenge Courses & Broadstone Park for the University Recreation Programs.
Appalachian State University is a member institution of the seventeen-campus University of North Carolina. Located in beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Boone, North Carolina, the University has over 17,000 students, primarily in bachelors and masters programs in both liberal arts and applied fields. Appalachian is a traditional residential campus with a variety of distance education programs.
Responsibilities: Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, supervise, and schedule all staff (a student staff of 30-50 per year) for the Challenge Course program, Parkway Corps volunteers, Bike APP program staff, three Graduate Assistants, and undergraduate students working directly with the program. This responsibility includes recruitment and providing training programs to introduce new staff and volunteers each semester. Oversight of three Graduate Assistants through training
s, evaluation and feedback. Advise and counsel the Human Power Club which is composed of students which have been recruited. Developing partnerships with outside vendors in order to provide wilderness medical courses at Broadstone Park, work with groups on campus in providing retreat and meeting space at the Broadstone Park facilities and provide advice, feedback and assistance to the maintenance staff in the upkeep of the Broadstone Park facility. Developing and maintaining a comprehensive statistical report for both the Challenge Course program and Broadstone Park activities. Assists with recruitment, hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, and evaluating of facility supervisors for Broadstone Park. Directly overseeing a student programmer for the Challenge Course program. Working to assist with the summer day camp program for children of the high country. This includes staff recruitment, hiring, training, evaluating, supervising and scheduling summer student counselors, programmers and professional staff. Marketing Challenge Courses and Broadstone Park through working with students to develop newsletters, accurate social media activity, develop new and trending ways of exposing the Challenge Course programs and Broadstone Park facilities to the campus and community.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree required/master’s preferred. Three or more years of experience working in the College Student Development field. Experience working with Challenge Course programs, management of facilities, advising, managing, supervising student leaders directly involved with outdoor adventure programs. Experience working with youth and providing age appropriate activities for a day camp setting. Good time management is a must. Maintain WFR, CPR/AED, First-Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens Instructor Certifications in order to serve as an instructor for UREC.
