Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Director for University Recreation Programs.
Appalachian State University is a member institution of the seventeen-campus University of North Carolina. Located in beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Boone, North Carolina, the University has over 17,000 students, primarily in bachelors and masters programs in both liberal arts and applied fields. Appalachian is a traditional residential campus with a variety of distance education programs.
Responsibilities: Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, supervise, and schedule all staff (a student staff of 100-130 per year) for the Fitness Recreation program to include weight room supervisors, aerobic/group fitness instructors, personal trainers/instructors, and student programmers. Develop, implement and oversee all programming for Fitness Recreation for the University community to include but not limited to aerobic classes, yoga classes, fitness testing, personal training, spin classes, self-defense clinics, and exercise prescription. Instructional responsibilities and duties include teaching academic courses for credit, courses such as Weight Training, Jogging & Conditioning, Aerobic Dance, and/or Aerobics Instructor Course/Personal Trainer Course. One of the most important aspects is the personal and professional development of student employees serving the Fitness Recreation program. The position directly oversees the daily operation of the fitness program on campus ensuring staffing and opening/closing. The development and implementation of ongoing leadership curriculum for Fitness Staff. This responsibility includes the annual Instructor Course – a training program to develop students in becoming group fitness instructors in both cardio and mind & body. Oversee the Group Fitness Instructors, Weight Room Supervisors, and Personal Trainers through trainings, evaluation and feedback. Advise students on a variety of personal, professional and educational issues. Resolve conflicts and complaints from participants and employees. Promote positive personal and professional development of all student staff. Developing and maintaining a comprehensive statistical report for the fitness program to include weight rooms, group fitness, and personal training. Direct recruitment, hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, evaluating, and overseeing student programmers, group fitness instructors, weight room supervisors, and personal trainers for the Fitness Recreation program. Working to assist with the summer day camp program for children of the high country. This includes staff recruitment, hiring, training, evaluating, supervising and scheduling summer student counselors, programmers and professional staff.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Recreation, or related field, and Fitness Certification through one or more of the following ACSM, NSCA, ACE or AFAA. RED Cross CPR/AED and First Aid Certification, and two years of experience working in a collegiate recreation program (Graduate experience will be considered). Successful candidate will have a strong background in teaching group fitness and the development of students as group fitness instructors. Must have strong written and communication skills, Microsoft computer experience, and managing/mentoring student employees.
